Legendary talk show host David Letterman summarizes the life cycle of steelhead in two words. “Small towns.”

As David Letterman’s legendary run as a late night talk show host comes to an end, I can only imagine what he’s going to do with all the spare time he isn’t used to having. The vast array of guests during his career from interviewing Hollywood celebrities to animal expert “Jungle” Jack Hannah have provided viewers from all walks of life with entertainment. Let’s hope Dave can get some time outdoors for himself after living vicariously through interviews with guests like celebrity angler Jerry McKinnis. The legendary television host says “It must be a great way to make a living, because it looks like it’s a lot of fun, and you get to go wonderful places all over.” In this clip from 1987, McKinnis shows Dave his by-catch of discarded items snagged in the East River as well as a bluefish. He also describes the life cycle of a steelhead, his favorite fish to catch, swimming to the ocean and returning to it’s natal stream. “Small towns,” says the New Yorker.
As his final shows aired, I reminisced about one of his more frequent guests that was a personal favorite of mine. “Jungle” Jack Hanna sought to bring the public an appreciation for all the earth’s creatures with his comical on-stage animal displays. Hanna’s quick wit and knack for improvising made him a great co-star alongside the many different species that appeared on air. With all sorts of different animals being televised doing what they do, Dave’s interactions with Jack will surely be nostalgic clips that will be remembered for years to come. Here’s a highlight reel showing some of the more hilarious moments when animals stole the show:
Farewell Dave, hope you finally get to enjoy some time out of the office.
